One of the largest municipal parks east of the Mississippi, this magnificent 7,711 acre-oasis is home to an
incredible variety of native wildlife – deer, foxes,
otter, raccoon and beaver, to name a few – all found
in a natural setting of lush woodlands, flowering meadows
and shimmering lakes. Its unique natural beauty makes Newport
News Park a favorite destination for campers who love the
great outdoors – and the convenience of being just
moments away from the multitude of activities and attractions
the surrounding area provides.

are spaciously arranged throughout natural woodlands and
are surrounded by many comforts of home including:

Campers and outdoor enthusiasts find Newport
News Park a perfect retreat for hiking or bicycling on the
Park’s many trails; picnicking in shelters with outdoor
grills; fishing, boating and canoeing on the Park’s
scenic lakes and inlets; and enjoying sports such as archery
and golf.
Boating and Fishing
Rowboat, canoe and paddleboat rentals are available from
the Newport News Park Campsite Office. Fishing is permitted
by permit in two large freshwater lakes. In addition, launching
ramps are available for privately owned watercraft (no gas
motors).
For history lovers, Newport News Park is
the site of some of the best preserved Civil War fortifications,
earthworks and redoubts in Virginia, and is a designated stop
on the official Virginia Civil War Trails network.

Special Events and Festivals
The Newport News Children’s Festival of Friends,
scheduled annually the first Saturday in May, is a special
family-oriented delight with a wealth of entertainment, exhibits

The Newport News Fall Festival of Folklife ,
a family tradition for two generations, takes place the first
weekend in October and features nationally known performers,
arts and crafts, delicious regional foods, and folk entertainment. Festival information.
Celebration in Lights is
a two-mile drive-through adventure, open nightly from Thanksgiving
through New Year’s, that magically transforms Newport
News Park into a wonderland of spectacular sights created
from more than 450,000 lights. This is truly one of the most
exciting events of the Yuletide season! Festival information.
Minutes from Everything! Newport News Park, located midway
between Richmond and Virginia Beach, is ideally situated
in an area rich in historical attractions, theme parks, museums

Picnic Shelters Newport News Park has twenty picnic shelters (18 full size
shelters and 2 group shelters). A full shelter, which accommodates
approximately 35 people, generally has three to four picnic
tables and one grill. A group shelter, which accommodates
approximately 150 people, has fifteen tables and one large
grill. Electricity is available at all shelters. Reservations can
be charged over the phone by calling 757-888-3333
or toll free at 1-800-203-8322. Reservations can
also be made in person at the Newport News Park Campsite
Office, Deer Park, or the Parks and Recreation Office at
Town Center (3 rd floor). Visa and MasterCard are accepted
at the Newport News Park Campsite Office.

Hiking, Jogging,
Biking Trails
For the hiking enthusiast, Newport News Park offers over
30 miles of trails through forest, field, and wetlands. Want
to go bicycling? Bring your own bike or rent one at the Campsite
Office. Newport News Park offers a 5.3-mile bikeway (unpaved,
multi-use trail). Children ages 14 and under are required
to wear a helmet when riding or being carried on a bicycle
on any street, sidewalk or bikeway. The Parks Division encourages
ALL bicyclists to wear a safety helmet.

Mountain Bike Trail
Three single-track loops (difficulty
levels vary) and connecting firetrails create approximately
5 miles of off-road bicycling fun at the Harwood’s Mill Mountain Bike Trail (located
across from the Harwood’s Mill Fishing Facility on
Oriana Road in York County). Open sunrise to sunset daily.
